The Valley VOTE Board of Directors have voted overwhelmingly to support the following motion:

"Valley Voters Organized Toward Empowerment support Councilmember Greig Smith's plan entitled Recovering Energy, Natural Resources and Economic Benefit from Waste for Los Angeles ( RENEW LA). This 20 year plan is designed to build environmentally safe conversion technologies that will recover and recycle over 90% of the city's waste by 2025."

RENEW LA presents for the city of Los Angeles a plan of action to radically change it's handling of trash from a system that is environmentally unsound to one that is used as a resource for economic benefit.

Implementation of the plan's recommendations will result in significant environmental benefits. It will create "green collar" jobs, conserve limited virgin resources, reduce traffic congestion, and generate renewable energy.

"I appreciate the endorsement of the RENEW LA plan by the Valley VOTE Board of Directors and look forward to their continuing support to ensure the goals of RENEW LA are met." said Councilmember Greig Smith

The plan calls for the following important accomplishments during the first 5 years [2005 - 2010]:

*Establish a RENEW LA oversight committee
*Adopt the RENEW LA blueprint and a Zero Waste Policy.

* Modify zoning codes to facilitate project development
*Site and develop the first two Conversion Technology [CT] plants
*Mandate a reduction in City - collected Municipal Solid Waste [MSW] going to the Sunshine Canyon Landfill over the next five years from the current 3,500 Tons Per Day [TPD] to 500 TPD
*Provide reductions on City taxes based on companies' recycling performance
*Add residential food waste to the green can program
*Expand commercial and multifamily pilot recycling programs
