The Valley VOTE Board of Directors has approved the following motion:
Valley VOTE opposes the Part 161 study document recommendation that any night time flights (from 10pm to 6:59am) be shifted from the Bob Hope Airport (BUR) to the Van Nuys airport.
Valley Vote empathizes with residents who are within the flight path areas impacted by the night time flights surrounding Bob Hope Airport (BUR). We understand their desire to restrict aircraft operations from 10:00 p.m. to 6:59 a.m. but feel it is inappropriate to shift their noise issue to those surrounding the Van Nuys Airport.
Noise transference from Burbank to Van Nuys is unacceptable and is neither a cost savings nor noise reduction. FAA action to entertain a regional resolution to this noise issue is encouraged and would be appreciated. Noise reduction flight procedures and development of quieter aircraft is in order. We encourage the FAA to modify and improve its definition of noise impact standards. The FAA should reduce the threshold used to identify impacted residents and provide increased sound insulation reduction to a much broader area.
As stated by Valley VOTE Executive Committee member Denny Schneider, “Bob Hope Airport management’s request to the FAA to ban night time flights shows that they want to be a good neighbor, but it’s inappropriate to simply push the noise problem from one community to another. Only the FAA can solve it for everyone and they have been reluctant to act.”
Valley VOTE is also pleased to join the LAX Advisory Committee and LAX-Community Noise Roundtable in their positions on this issue. Both organizations have submitted their remarks on the Part 161 study to the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority in opposition to the recommendation of shifiting night flight noise.
